Wärtsilä Closed Loop Scrubber
A cost effective alternative to low sulphur content fuels for reducing SOx emissions
The Wärtsilä SOx Reducer concept is based on the closed loop system, using fresh water with added caustic soda (NaOH) as the scrubbing liquid.
A small bleed-off is extracted from the loop to remove accumulated impurities from the scrubbing water. This is then discharged to the emulsion breaking water treatment plant. Clean effluent from the treatment plant fulfils IMO quality requirements and can be discharged overboard. The SOx removal efficiency of the Wärtsilä SOx Reducer system exceeds 97%, making it possible to operate with 3.5% sulphur fuel and still comply with the 0.1% sulphur fuel limit.
Following the Hamworthy acquisition by Wärtsilä, Wärtsilä Fresh Water Scrubber is renamed Wärtsilä Closed Loop Scrubber.
