Wärtsilä RT-flex84T / RTA84T
Economical propulsion of very large crude oil tankers
The Wärtsilä RT-flex84T and RTA84T low-speed marine diesel engines are custom designed for the economical propulsion of very large crude oil tankers (VLCCs and ULCCs) of up to 300,000 dwt.
The parameters of the Wärtsilä RTA84T and RTA84T low-speed engines are based on the needs of VLCC newbuildings. For example, a VLCC of 285,000 dwt needs an average installed power of around 27,000 kW for a service speed of 15.5 knots. The standard selected propeller speed of some 70 to 79 rpm, is a direct result of aiming for an ‘optimum propulsion’ installation within the widely accepted MARPOL recommendations for the selection of propeller diameters.
The Wärtsilä RT-flex84T and RTA84T provide excellent power and speed reliability for a wide variety of ship types from Handysize and Handymax up to Capesize and Suezmax.
Available in 5-cylinder up to 9-cylinder configuration, the Wärtsilä RT-flex84T and RTA84T low-speed engines cover a power range from 14,700 to 37,800 kW at 61 to 76 rpm.
The Wärtsilä RT-flex84T and RTA84T engines are fully compliant with the IMO Tier II exhaust emissions regulations set out in Annex VI of the MARPOL 73/78 convention.
